The Galilee boat
GradeIllustrative
Several of Jesus' first disciples were fishermen on the Sea of Galilee: James and John "left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants" (), and Mark tells of a storm on the lake (). During the 1986 drought a fishing boat was found on the northwest shore, 8.2 metres long and 2.3 metres wide. It is dated to 40 BCE ± 80 years by radiocarbon and to 50 BCE-50 CE by its pottery, nails and construction. It had four rowers and a mast and had been repaired many times. Christians see in it the size and crew of the boats the Gospels describe, a working boat with room for a family and hired hands.
Illustrative. The boat is authentic and of the period, and it shows what a boat like those in Mark looked like.
